Lung Scan
This test is used to detect early signs of lung disease and cancer at a stage when treatment can be most successful. Highly recommended for current and former smokers, or those regularly exposed to second-hand smoke. It’s a far better alternative then a chest X-ray for detecting lung cancer.
The lung scan also looks for obstructive disease, such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, as well as nodules and masses. Whether benign or malignant, these masses need to be followed for changes in size or referred to a specialist. In addition, the lung scan can identify Pleural disease (e.g. asbestos exposure), hiatal hernias, thoracic spine abnormalities and other conditions.
While lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths in both men and women, only 15% of lung cancer is caught in the early stages. Lung cancer can be cured if it is detected early and before too much harm has been done.
